I would recommend a doula to anyone who is having a baby. Even with a supportive husband, I think that women need to have the additional support of a professional to help guide them through labor and delivery. It makes such a positive difference in the birth experience. The birth of my son was the most wonderful and amazing event. It was also the most challenging thing I’ve ever done – both mentally and physically. It was so wonderful to have the support of a doula.

Exceptional help! I would have not been able to do it (labor) without my doula and my husband. She was a critical and necessary part of my managing to get through a long and difficult labor. The knowledge she had of all aspects of delivery – nubain, epidural, what pushing feels like, what may help the baby turn, etc. and being supportive of my husband, too, was helpful…my husband felt the same, as well. Unfortunately, my cervix did not dilate after 2 days of labor, so a c-section was necessary. The doula was supportive, appropriate, helpful and emotionally strong throughout the whole experience. Our doula met us in the hospital parking lot, took charge of transporting me very efficiently to the maternity ward, she was calm and encouraging throughout labor and post-delivery stitches, and she retrieved our camera from the car post-delivery so Dad could stay with me and the baby. During the “false labor” (my doula) helped by doing counter pressure, changing positions, back massage, and help in concentration. On the actual day of labor she was able with one contraction to help me become centered, relaxed, stop “fighting” the pain and contractions. As a result, I entered transition immediately afterwards. My husband had been unable to help me enter the “transcendental” state, as he calls it. Both my husband and I appreciate the role the doula brings to the birth.
