THE DOULA CONCEPT...

‘Doula’ is a Greek word for those who are specially trained to ‘Mother the Mother’. There are two distinct types of doulas, each with their separate training and certification requirements:

Labor Support (birth) Doulas offer personal assistance and comfort measures throughout the entire labor and birth process. Professional labor support has been shown to decrease a woman’s need for cesarean section by as much as 50%, increase her (and her partner’s) satisfaction with the birth experience, and enhance her relationship with her partner.

Postpartum Doulas provide sensitive, calming, and knowledgeable personal assistance - nurturing the new mother and family after birth. A postpartum doula offers the mother time to rest and heal from the birth experience while acting as an invaluable, up-to-date information resource. A postpartum doula can provide loving, experienced newborn and sibling care as well as offer freedom from meal preparation and routine household chores.
